Russian Jack Springs Park is a large park in Anchorage, Alaska, spanning over 300 acres. Named after Jacob Marunenko, a Russian immigrant who once owned a homestead near a freshwater spring, the park has a rich history. Initially purchased by the US Army in 1943, it was later used as a prison after World War II. When Alaska became a state in 1959, the prison closed and the land was divided, with part becoming a park and the rest used for an alcohol rehabilitation hospital. The Girl Scouts and Lion’s Club also utilized portions of the park for campgrounds, with the Girl Scouts still maintaining a day camp today.
The park offers a wide range of recreational activities. Visitors can enjoy multiple softball fields, tennis courts, and a soccer field. There are also two picnic areas, a public greenhouse, and solarium, as well as a sledding hill and a nine-hole golf course. For outdoor enthusiasts, there is a well-lit trail suitable for running in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter. Additionally, the park features miles of walking trails. In the northeastern section, where the old Lion’s Club campgrounds were located, there is a spacious off-leash area for dogs. While there are no poop bags or seating in this area, water fountains are available throughout the park. Dogs are welcome throughout the park but must be leashed in most areas.
Located on the outskirts of Anchorage, Russian Jack Springs Park is situated in a sparsely populated wilderness area. Visitors should be mindful of the potential presence of bears, moose, and other wildlife. The off-leash area is not fenced, so it is important to ensure that your dog is well-trained and responsive to recall commands. While much of the park remains open year-round, certain sections may have seasonal availability. The park follows the sunrise to sunset schedule, which can vary significantly in Alaska due to its unique daylight patterns.
