The Black Forest Hound, also known as the Slovakian Hound or Slovensk kopov, is a breed that originated in Slovakia and is considered the national breed of the country. Despite its name, the Black Forest has no connection to the creation of this breed. The name may have been chosen for marketing purposes, as the breed is still relatively uncommon outside of Slovakia and a few nearby countries.
Historically, Black Forest Hounds were selectively bred for hunting wild boar. Unlike many other European scent hounds that were bred to hunt various game, these hounds were specifically trained to hunt wild boar. However, they are versatile and can be used for other game or even in the police force due to their high level of skill and adaptability. Despite their small size, standing at 18 inches tall and weighing around 40 pounds, they are known to be tough hunters. Their prey can grow up to four feet tall and weigh up to 200 pounds. Black Forest Hounds have exceptional scenting skills, great stamina, and an impressive sense of direction.
In terms of temperament, they are generally good with children and fairly well-behaved with other dogs when in the presence of people in their home. They are loyal, dedicated, and affectionate, making them ideal companions. They are naturally suspicious of strangers, which also makes them excellent watchdogs. 📖 Breed History
The Black Forest Hound is a breed that originated in the late 19th century. It is believed to have been created by mixing the Brandlbracke, Chart Polski, and Magyar Agar. The Brandlbracke is a large black and tan scent hound, while the other two are large sighthounds that are trim in size. The breed as it is recognized today was first seen in 1870, but its history extends further back, originating from a small variety of native European scent hounds.
Due to laws in previous eras that prohibited crossbreeding with known purebreds, the bloodline of the Black Forest Hound remained mostly unchanged for a long time. Breeding was closely monitored in the early-to-mid 20th century, with specific genetic selections being made. Koloman Slimák, a respected cynologist, played a significant role in the breed’s development. In 1936, he helped organize a breeding exhibition where the most suitable dogs were chosen for breeding. Another exhibition was held after World War II in 1946 to assess the breed’s numbers and purity. Since then, the popularity of the Black Forest Hound has slowly increased.
In 1963, the breed received recognition from the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale). The “Slovak Hound Breeders Club” was formed in 1988, further promoting the breed. Finally, in 2006, the United Kennel Club officially recognized the Black Forest Hound.
🐕 Black Forest Hound Appearance
The Black Forest Hound is a medium-sized dog with an average height of 18 inches (females tend to be a little shorter) and weight of 40 pounds. The Black Forest Hound’s name is consistent with its coloration, even though it has nothing to do with the German Black Forest region. It is similar to both the Austrian Black and Tan Hound (Brandlbracke) and the Black and Tan Coonhound. Their short, thick coats are solid black with brown patterns that are often found on the face, chest, and legs. Their large, slightly rounded, and somewhat abruptly terminating heads lead to long, rectangular muzzles that are topped with black noses. Their deep-set, black eyes are accompanied by medium to high-set, folded, wide, and medium-length ears that hang down to the chin. In relation to their size, their necks and legs are both rather short, giving them a slightly boxy appearance overall. They have moderately strong bodies that are somewhat longer than they are tall, a deep, broad chest that gives them a fair deal of breadth between their front legs, and bodies that are somewhat longer than they are tall. Their bellies are also gently tucked in, and their toplines are barely sloping. They often carry their long, tapering tails in a curving motion, although usually not above the back.

⚡ Fun Fact:
🐶 Traits & Temperament of Black Forest Hound
Even while the Black Forest Hound exhibits certain conventional European scent hound traits, it also stands out in particular situations. They are persistent and committed when hunting, cheerfully and ecstatically pursuing smells and trails for hours on end without becoming weary and bringing down prey that may be up to almost four times their size. In contrast to most other tracking traits, Slovakian Hounds are most recognized for their eerily accurate sense of direction. They are able to maintain this orientation both within the terrain and between their owner and prey with amazing skill. Even though many dogs are reared and trained in packs, their acceptance of other dogs can still be in doubt, particularly when it comes to canines of the same sex since they frequently make attempts to establish their authority. If properly socialized and nurtured from an early age, they often do okay, can cohabit peacefully, and even work together to hunt. Although they are reputed to be kind and tolerant around youngsters, it is essential to socialize them early and thoroughly as with any breed. This breed is typically apprehensive of strangers and will bark to inform their owners if they suspect something is wrong or if they or their family are in any way in danger, making them great watch and guard dogs. Although they can be a little stubborn at times and are only moderately tough to train, they should be trainable by an owner with some expertise as long as they are firm and persistent. They are devoted and loving to their family, although occasionally being a little irritable, especially if they aren’t getting enough exercise. They do need some, but not excessive, activity to stay happy and healthy, but if their owners are at least somewhat active, they can adjust to living in smaller quarters.

🐩 Black Forest Hound Care & Maintenance
Overall, Black Forest Hounds are considered low care canines since their short, thick coats only require occasional brushing with a strong bristle brush to remove dirt and loose hair. They often do a decent job of keeping themselves clean, so they don’t require frequent baths unless they get into anything really filthy or smelly. In fact, excessive washing might be a problem since it disturbs the skin’s and coat’s natural oils. If they are used for hunting, it is important to personally inspect them after each outing to make sure they haven’t taken any parasites from the outside with them. Their nails will deteriorate much more quickly if they are given adequate exercise, whether via tracking and hunting or another activity, but if they are only given enough exercise to meet minimum needs, they will need to be examined and clipped on a regular basis to avoid cracks and breaks. To make sure that they are not accumulating additional moisture or wax that might lead to infections, their folded ears should also be examined. Once a week brushing is recommended for maintaining good dental health.
